Village

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE VILLAGE:

The settlement Gerlachov was founded in the 14th Century by a man called Gerlach, the son of Maynhard from Horský Svätý Júr (Spišská Sobota). The peak was named after the village, and the village was named after its patron, the saint Gerlach. The name Gerlach is of old Teutonic origin and it can be translated as somebody javelin drilling, playing with lance. The village is situated in the basin between the High and the Low Tatra mountains, in the centre of the High Tatra foothills, close to Gerlach Peak.
